Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute

Project Value: $217 Million
Project Status: completed in 2008

Darren was the Design Project Manager for Stantec which provided full architecture and interior design services for this world-class cardiac care facility. The 248-bed facility was built above and adjacent to the one of the busiest emergency centres in Canada without disruption. Spanning five floors, the MAHI offers the best in cardiac patient-care services, research, and education. Design elements include flexible space to accommodate advancing cardiac care practice; universal cardiac beds that flex between ICU level care and transitional care without significant modifications; decentralized nursing models for all cardiac patient floors; surgical areas and catheterization/electrophysiology labs that easily convert and minimize disruption to adjoining services. The unique curving shape of the tower is designed to support state-of-the-art ICUs, while also serving as an icon and entrance. This project was Western Canada’s first LEED Silver Acute Care facility. The design was split into multiple tender packages that allowed work to proceed on a fast-track basis.
